Invisalign is an effective alternative to getting metal braces. They are a progressive set of clear, unobtrusive and comfortable trays that are easily removed. Proper use of them will achieve the same if not better results than a set of metal braces. Many patients ask ‘Is Invisalign the right treatment for me?” Always consult with your dentist prior to making a final decision, but here are some of the most common questions that we get asked.
How long do I have to wear them?Every case is different but many cases can be resolved within a year. Each aligner is normally worn for 2 weeks with daily wear of 22 hours per day.
Do I have to change how I eat and drink? No, in fact this is one of the most compelling reasons to choose Invisalign. Having a snack like popcorn at the movies can make you wonder if there’s a kernal stuck in the wiring or brackets, but having Invisalign treatment means you can pop out the aligners and enjoy your snack like normal. Just make sure that you brush your teeth thoroughly before putting them back in.
Does Invisalign affect my speech?During your first few days you may notice a slight change in your speech, while your tongue gets used to this new device. While you may have a slight lisp at first, this typically goes away and you should be speaking normally again in a short time.
How do I clean them?First, you need to keep your mouth clean. Brush and floss your teeth after every snack and meal. If you skip brushing, you’ll get food, plaque and bacteria in your tray. Since aligners sit so close to your teeth, they can trap these hazards right next to the tooth and gum line where they can cause ample damage. Secondly, beyond simply brushing and rinsing your aligner, you can soak your aligner trays in clear mouthwash, a 50-50 solution of water and hydrogen peroxide, Polident denture cleaner, or a 50-50 blend of vinegar and water. Invisalign also sells a cleaning kit designed just for your aligners.
What if I play sports? Invisalign aligners are specifically designed to help straighten your teeth and are not a substitute for a sports mouth guard. If you are going to be participating in competitive sports you need to remove the aligners and wear a proper mouth guard.
Invisalign is a comfortable and effective alternative to wearing traditional braces and with a little care and effort you’ll see your smile straighten magically before your eyes! It is easy to see why they are more and more popular. If you have further questions, we encourage you to make an appointment with one of our dentists here at Nottingham Dental and they would be pleased to help answer them.
